Week 24
The fetus is now about 30cm long and weighs around 600g. Hair also started to grow more on the head and eyebrows. The ear in the fetus is fully developed. It works by controlling the sense of balance.
Fetuses begin to accumulate fat under their skin, this fat will help regulate their body temperature after birth. You may need to do the MGTT (Modified Glucose Tolerance Test) where you will be given sugary drinks a second time to check your blood sugar levels.
Symptoms
Some pregnant women experience carpal tunnel syndrome or tingling and numbness in the fingers and wrists.
Your hands and feet may also swell. Another symptom is that you may feel itchy skin and in eye area and also dry skin.
Tips for you
Try using a moisturizer if you have dry skin and use tear drops if you experience itchy eyes. Try to limit the time you have to use the phone and computer.
If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, wearing a wrist splint at night can help keep your wrist in a neutral position and reduce pressure on the median nerve.
Ultrasound Scans & Tests
Let’s check the types of Ultrasound Scans and tests that you can do at 24 weeks of pregnancy:
- Growth Scan
- Gender Scan
- Anatomy Scan
- 2D, 5D and 6D Scans
- VR Scan
- NIPT test
Growth Scan: A growth scan, also known as a fetal growth ultrasound, is performed to assess your baby’s growth and development. It measures the baby’s size, estimates the weight, and evaluates the overall well-being. The scan helps monitor the baby’s growth rate, amniotic fluid levels, and placental function.
Gender Scan: A gender scan, also referred to as a sex determination scan, is an ultrasound to reveal the baby’s gender if you choose to know. It can typically be done around 18 to 20 weeks, but it can sometimes be performed during the 24-week mark. This scan is optional and is not a part of routine prenatal care.
Anatomy Scan: The anatomy scan, also called a detailed or anomaly scan, is a comprehensive ultrasound examination usually performed between 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy. It assesses the baby’s major organs, limbs, and overall anatomy to check for any structural abnormalities or markers for certain conditions. This scan provides valuable information about the baby’s development.
2D, 5D, and 6D Scans: These terms refer to the different types of ultrasound imaging technologies available.
- 2D Scan: A traditional two-dimensional ultrasound scan that displays a black and white image of the baby.
- 5D Scan: This refers to the use of advanced software to create a real-time moving image of the baby in three dimensions (3D) and adds color and depth to the image, making it more realistic.
- 6D Scan: It is a marketing term used by some providers to describe a similar experience to a 5D scan with additional enhancements, such as virtual reality (VR) goggles or other technologies to enhance the visualization experience.
It’s important to note that 5D and 6D scans are not standard medical scans and are usually offered by private clinics as a way to provide enhanced imaging experiences for parents.
VR Scan: A VR (Virtual Reality) scan is a specialized type of ultrasound scan that incorporates virtual reality technology. It allows expectant parents to experience a virtual representation of their baby’s features and movements in a more immersive way. This type of scan offers a unique and interactive experience, but it’s considered an optional add-on and is not part of routine prenatal care.
NIPT Test: Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a blood test that screens for common chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13. It analyzes fetal DNA present in the mother’s bloodstream. NIPT is typically offered between 10 to 12 weeks of pregnancy, but it can still be performed at 24 weeks if necessary.
It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider regarding the availability and suitability of these scans and tests based on your specific needs, preferences, and medical history. They will guide you on which scans and tests are recommended during your pregnancy journey.
